Vegan MP Kerry McCarthy has been appointed by Jeremy Corbyn as the shadow minister for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. Corbyn the recently elected leader of the opposition in the UK parliament is also himself a long term vegetarian.
Ms McCarthy became the first MP to address parliament with the compelling arguments for adopting a vegan diet on World Vegan Day four years ago.
She has also campaigned against the Government's badger cull and fox hunting in her
capacity as vice-
There is urgent need for a shadow minister who can put pressure on the Conservative government whose policies have been disastrous for animals. So her presence will be much appreciated by animal welfare campaigners.
Her areas of focus are expected to include animal farming and the badger cull, and she will be able to put significant pressure on the government with regard to these issues to improve the welfare of animals in the UK.
Kerry McCarthy is expected to further increase awareness within parliament about the animal suffering caused by meat, dairy and egg consumption. She is also expected to raise awareness of the health and environmental benefits of a plant based diet.
Her appointment could well pave the way for progressive legislation in the future. Seeing an end to subsides for animal farmers and regulation to minimise animal cruelty and exploitation in Britain and Europe.
